How Dual Booting is Revolutionizing the Windows Marketplace.

Once you've got Windows up and running, what should you do? Of course, this is up to you, but here are a few recommendations from me.

  1. Run Windows Update and install all updates that are recommended
  2. Install the latest DirectX.
  3. Install the Google Pack, but exclude these programs: Norton Antivirus 2005 Special Edition, GalleryPlayer HD Images, RealPlayer, and Google Video Player.
  4. Install antivirus software. I recommend the free, but extremely powerful and always-updated AVG Anti-Virus. It is not intrusive, and updates automatically.
  5. OPTIONAL: If you love security and want absolutely no threat of a virus and are knowledgeable about computers, use ZoneAlarm free firewall. This software will require a lot of input from you, but it is just about the best firewall and protection against viruses out there!
  6. OPTIONAL: If you feel that too many programs are starting up in Windows, go to Start, then Run, then type "msconfig" into the box that pops up. Then click the startup tab, and choose which programs you want to load when Windows starts. CAUTION: if you de-select programs that must load, you will be in big trouble. Be cautious when you de-select programs. De-selecting system programs can be a problem.
  7. Open Internet Explorer. Click on Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > Internet icon, click on "Default Level" button, then the "Apply" button. Now click on the "Custom Level" button. In the ActiveX section, set the first two options (Download "signed" and "unsigned" ActiveX controls) to 'prompt'. Then change the "Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" option to 'disable'. Now when a site tried to download something to your system, it will ask you if you want the ActiveX objects to be executed, and whether or not you want the downloaded program to be installed.
